Storm causes several outages

A severe thunderstorm knocked out power to a number of area residents Sunday night, according to information compiled by Penelec.

According to Penelec’s outage reports, more than 100 people were without power near Amelia Street in Hollidaysburg and along Polecat Road in East Freedom late Sunday.

In Altoona, another cluster of homes was without power near Wopsononock Avenue and Ninth Street.

Other smaller outages, between 20 and 100 people, also occurred in Claysburg and other parts of southern Blair County, according to Penelec.

In Kimmel Township, Bedford County, upward of 500 people were without power, according to Penelec.

The southern part of Blair County and parts of Huntingdon County were under a severe storm warning from the National Weather Service until late Sunday. The alert was downgraded to a watch about 7 p.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

According to NWS, a cold front moved into the region on Sunday night, causing the severe storms.

The thunderstorms included heavy rainfall, damaging winds and dime-sized hail, according to NWS.

Area emergency personnel were unavailable Sunday night to discuss the extent of any storm damage.
