Police: Pit bull attacks 3-year-old

A 3-year-old girl was hospitalized Sunday after a dog attacked her near Everett, before fleeing into nearby woods, state police said.

The girl was walking with her family along Milk and Water Road in West Providence Township around 4:30 p.m. when the dog – described by police as a blue-nose pit bull without a collar – attacked her, police said.

The dog ran into the woods, troopers said in an incident report.

The girl was taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment. Her injuries aren’t life-threatening, state police spokesman Trooper David McGarvey said, but she remained in the hospital as of Monday afternoon.

The dog hadn’t been found as of Monday afternoon, and neighbors interviewed by police said they hadn’t seen a pit bull matching the family’s description.

Police have asked anyone with information on the dog to call the Bedford barracks at 623-6133.

The dog attack is at least the second in the region in the past week. On July 15, a Logan Township man was attacked, police said.
