Police: Man sexually assaulted 9-year-old girl from Claysburg

Greenfield Township police arrested a Johnstown man Wednesday for allegedly molesting a young girl repeatedly during an extended visit to Claysburg.

Police said Bobby Joe Kerby, 50, showed the 9-year-old girl a sexual video and touched her nearly every night while staying at her family’s Claysburg-area home. The girl is on the autism spectrum, police said.

The investigation began on July 12, when the girl allegedly told a relative that Kerby had touched her during his stay. The relative told the girl’s mother, who in turn contacted Greenfield Township police.

During a police interview, the girl allegedly said “Bobby did bad things” and described sexual incidents that occurred nearly every night as he tucked her in to bed.

Greenfield Township Police Chief Ronald Givler said Kerby, who lives in Johnstown and works at a pizza parlor, didn’t live permanently with the family.

Givler notified Johnstown police of the warrant for Kerby’s arrest this week. Officers there apprehended him at his workplace and turned him over to Greenfield Township officers early Wednesday.

He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Craig E. Ormsby and remains in Blair County Prison in lieu of $80,000 bail, Givler said.

Kerby faces charges including involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, aggravated indecent assault of a child and corruption of minors.

A preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 7 at Ormsby’s Roaring Spring office.
