Judge approves sale of former Altoona elementary school

HOLLIDAYSBURG – A Blair County judge has signed off on the Altoona Area School District’s sale of the former Curtin School, 2914 W. Chestnut Ave., for $140,100.

The former elementary school, which closed in 1989 with the opening of Ebner Elementary, is in the process of being sold to Rebecca Reese, owner and director of Blair Dance Academy. She intends to use the building for dance instruction. The district, until last year, used the structure for preschool programs.

The sale’s settlement date is set for July 31, attorney Ronald Repak of the Andrews & Beard law firm said Monday after Judge Elizabeth Doyle signed a document in approval of the proposed sale.

Real estate appraiser Micah Rothrauff of Four Seasons Appraisal Services, Hollidaysburg, when testifying in court Monday, said the sale price of $140,100 exceeds the building’s appraisal of $125,000.

Repak also presented Doyle with a document from real estate agent Francis Wiley of Altoona, who described the proposed sale price as fair.

No others attended the hearing to offer comment or testimony.

Doyle said she had a chance to review the petition before the hearing. She signed an order last week directing the hearing to be held Monday, the date the school district has been advertising.
