Coroner: Child’s death at lake was accidental

The death of a 13-month-old child at Raystown Lake on Wednesday has been officially ruled accidental by

Huntingdon County Coroner Paul Sharum.

Sharum said that, after an autopsy Thursday afternoon, Jamari Benjamin of Ephrata accidentally drowned after falling from a houseboat into the lake on Wednesday.

Marklesburg Volunteer Fire Chief Marlin Hunsicker said firefighters were dispatched to the scene about 8 a.m.

The child was taken to J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon and was pronounced dead about 9:40 a.m., Sharum said Wednesday.

Pennsylvania State Police are hoping to identify another person on the lake who helped take the child to shore.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 627-3161.

The child’s death is the third drowning incident on Raystown Lake this summer.

Francesca “Chessie” Marie Harris, 36, of Carlisle died on July 3 after she was trapped behind the double doors of the cuddy cabin beneath the deck of a sinking boat.

Dustin Scott Weyandt, 23, of Duncansville drowned on June 17 while attempting to swim across a cove.
