Cambria to get aid for acid treatment

HARRISBURG – Three water treatment systems in Cambria County will receive financial assistance from the state Department of Environmental Protection to remove acid mine drainage from nearby waterways, said state Rep. Gary Haluska, D-Patton.

Bell Woodcock, Cambria No. 51 Mine and Stroud treatment systems in Reade Township, will receive part of a $1.66 million grant awarded by the department to the Clean Streams Foundation Inc. The grant is designed to help cover the cost for water monitoring, treatment chemicals, sludge removal and emergency repairs, among other things.

Police: Man died

of smoke from fire

A Nanty Glo man died from smoke inhalation Thursday as the result of an accidental fire, according to Pennsylvania State Police at Ebensburg.

William Ferguson, 64, died in a fire that occurred about 7:30 a.m. at a residence along Springfield Street in Blacklick Township, police said. It originated in the living room area, caused by an electrical malfunction, police said.

State police fire marshals investigated the fire, police said, and classified it an accident.
