Police: Man shot son during argument

A Lakemont man shot his son in the ankle during an argument Saturday afternoon, Logan Township police said.

Police were called to the house at 729 Shand Ave. at 5:25 p.m., Chief Ron Heller said, after 31-year-old Richard Bowers reported that his father, 63-year-old Jeffrey Bowers, had shot him.

Richard Bowers smoked and chatted with emergency workers as they rolled his gurney to an ambulance. Heller said he was treated at UPMC Altoona and noted his wound was not life-threatening.

The argument began when Jeffrey Bowers, apparently intoxicated, insisted on leaving the house despite his son’s protests, police said. Richard Bowers demanded his father stay home, Heller said.

Jeffrey Bowers went to another room, and as his son stood behind a door, allegedly fired a .22-caliber pistol under the door. The single shot struck his son’s ankle, Heller said.

When police arrived, the elder Bowers didn’t fight back or present a threat, Heller said.

Twenty minutes after the emergency call, Logan Township officers and Pennsylvania State Police troopers could be seen carrying pistols from the house while an Altoona Curve announcer could be clearly heard from nearby People’s Natural Gas Field.

Police then loaded a shouting Jeffrey Bowers into a patrol car. He is set to face charges including aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment, Heller said.

Bowers has repeatedly faced past charges for drunken driving, according to online court documents.
