Warrant issued for man on run

An arrest warrant has been issued for a Hollidaysburg man who threatened to harm himself and fled into the woods Thursday in the East Loop area of Frankstown Township.

State police at Hollidaysburg said Brandon D. Newton, 23, whose last known address was 708 Betsy Lane, is charged with theft of a firearm and receiving stolen property. Newton remains at large and may possibly be in the woods near the Hollidaysburg Sportsmen’s Club.

As of 10:47 p.m. Friday, Blair County Prison officials said Newton was not in prison. No state police trooper was available to confirm whether Newton had been arrested and in custody of police.

Police said Friday that Newton may be armed with a stolen firearm.

On Thursday, the Hollidaysburg Area School District locked down Frankstown Elementary School after state police informed district officials that a man with a weapon had fled into the woods and that he was contained in an area near Hollidaysburg Sportsman Road. The district was forced to cancel one of its bus routes.

East Loop Road and about a half-dozen adjoining roads, most of them dead ends, were shut off to traffic, and residents already in their homes were told to stay put Thursday until the situation was resolved.

All roads were open on Friday, said Trooper David McGarvey, state police spokesman.

Anyone with information about Newton’s location is asked to call the state police at 696-6100.
