Police: Missing firearm found
Altoona Area School District officials were in the process of scanning students with a metal detector wand for a second day in a row when the call came from Altoona city police: The gun and ammunition that had been reported missing from a family home on Monday was found.
High school Principal Patricia Burlingame notified parents on the district’s electronic mailing list.
“I appreciate your support and help with keeping our children safe. I did wand the students again [Tuesday] morning as a precaution, and the phone call came in as we were in the process of wanding them,” Burlingame wrote.
The gun owner, a father of an Altoona Area High School student, had reported the missing weapon and ammunition.
Upon arriving at school Monday, all high school students were checked for the gun by school security personnel.
