Crash closes lane of I-99
A tractor-trailer slid down a 30-foot embankment on I-99, about a mile north of the Bellwood exit, after striking a PennDOT truck, according to state police.
It was 4:15 a.m. when the 2007 Freightliner tractor-trailer, driven by George Richter, 56, of Connellsville, clipped the back end of 2007 Mack dump truck, police said.
Richter’s truck was directly behind the PennDOT truck as both traveled southbound when Richter tried to pass, police said. After Richter’s truck struck the dump truck, the fully loaded tractor-trailer skidded and slid sideways into the guardrail, then down a 30-foot embankment. The truck came to rest 310 feet from where it hit the dump truck, police noted.
The PennDOT dump truck, driven by Robert Monahan, 53, of Hollidaysburg, came to a stop on the berm. Monahan was not hurt.
Richter was taken by AMED ambulance to UPMC Altoona with what police described as moderate injuries. State police were assisted at the scene by Bellwood, Pinecroft, Tyrone and Greenwood volunteer fire departments.
The wreck closed one lane of I-99 for most of the day as crews worked to pull the tractor-trailer from the bottom of the embankment.
Police noted Richter will be cited for traffic violations.
