Suspect in custody in Claysburg fire

CLAYSBURG — Greenfield Township police have arrested a suspect in a Tuesday night apartment fire that forced five families from their homes, officers said.

Police did not immediately provide a name or list charges for the suspect.

The fire, which began after dark Tuesday at a Claysburg apartment complex, spread rapidly from a small shed to an adjacent two-story building, neighbors at the scene said. By 11:30 p.m., firefighters could be seen tearing into the walls of a badly damaged apartment.

A Greenfield Township police officer suffered from smoke inhalation after rushing to the scene, a township employee said.

In a news release, the American Red Cross said the fire displaced five families.

The apartment fire was the second possibly suspicious blaze to hit the township in two days. On Monday night, a raging fire destroyed a barn along Ski Gap Road, drawing dozens of firefighters from three counties.

In an online statement, police said the barn fire is still under investigation.
