Pirates prospect Taillon will have Tommy John surgery

Pirates pitching prospect Jameson Taillon will need Tommy John surgery in his right elbow, a procedure that will keep him out of action for about a year.

Taillon, who pitched for the Curve last season, was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 draft. He’s a prized right-hander who throws in the upper 90s, and he was scheduled to pitch in Triple-A to start this season, then possibly join the Pirates at some point this summer.

The 22-year-old has an injury to his ulnar collateral ligament, and a statement from the Pirates said he has elected to have the surgery.
