Man faces 2,400 charges

EVERETT – Police filed 2,400 charges against a Bedford County man Thursday, accusing him of raping three female relatives hundreds of times over several years.

State police at Bedford said Michael William Edmonson, 45, assaulted the girls when they were as young as 5, gradually increasing the alleged abuse as they became older. Two of the alleged victims are now in their 20s, police said; a third, age 14, was allegedly abused as recently as February.

A three-page affidavit details the girls’ horror in the face of Edmonson’s alleged assaults, which they said occurred multiple times each week. The assaults took place at his Everett-area home, in an empty Chaneysville farmhouse and at Edmonson’s workplace before coworkers arrived, state police said.

“[One victim] said she would sleep curled up in a ball with the covers wrapped around her and would hope and pray that he would not come into her room,” an investigating trooper wrote.

One girl allegedly told police that, when she was 14 or 15, Edmonson would drive she and a sister through the countryside, pulling them out for assaults in a roadside field.

Once, when she refused to commit a sex act in his car, he drew a sawed-off shotgun, pointed it at her head and threatened to kill her, she told police.

In late February, when police interviewed one of the girls, she said the most recent assault had taken place during a sleepover two days earlier. The girl said Edmonson attacked her while her friend showered in another room, according to the police affidavit.

Other alleged assaults took place after Edmonson’s wife went to bed. On occasion, he would send her to the store and commit rapes after she left, one alleged victim said. Some took place in a salt storage facility at the business where he worked.

“She said this continued up until the point that she reported the incident,” a trooper wrote. “She said she does not remember specific days, because it occurred way too often and she just tried to block it out.”

Police said assaults took place throughout Bedford County, with reports in Southampton Township, South Woodbury Township and Everett Borough.

Edmonson was apprehended Thursday and placed in Bedford County Jail, where he remains in lieu of $100,000 bail, according to court documents. Among the 2,426 charges against him are hundreds of felony counts, including rape by threat, statutory sexual assault and indecent deviate sexual intercourse with a child. A defense attorney was not listed in court documents Thursday.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled Wednesday before Magisterial District Judge Kathy S. Calhoun.
