PSU to hold ‘major announcement’ Saturday; Franklin hire expected to be revealed

Penn State announced this afternoon that there will be a “major announcement” Saturday at 4:15 p.m. with president Rodney Erickson and athletic director Dave Joyner, and it’s expected to be the decision to hire James Franklin as the new football coach.

It’s standard practice in these situations for the new coach to be in attendance.

Franklin, 41, is a Langhoren, Pa., native who has been head coach at Vanderbilt the past three seasons. He led the Commodores to back-to-back 9-4 seasons the past two years, bringing success to a program that has never enjoyed much of it in its 123-year history.

Franklin, if hired, would succeed Bill O’Brien, who left Penn State to take over the Houston Texans.
