Man allegedly confessed to sexual assault of girl
BEAVERDALE – Police said a Beaverdale man has confessed to repeatedly sexually assaulting a mentally handicapped 16-year-old girl who, according to her aunt, has the mental capacity of a 3-year-old.
Summerhill Township police arrested David Eugene Carman Jr., 45, 833 Cameron Ave., Tuesday for allegedly assaulting the girl, whose name has not been released, 10 times between May and December.
Police Chief Paul Bonfanti said police became aware of the relationship Monday after the victim’s aunt contacted them.
According to a criminal complaint, the aunt told police her niece had been gone for two hours Monday, and when she went to Carman’s house to find her, Carman “came to the door out of breath and panting and stated that the victim was not there.”
When the victim came home later, police said she refused to speak with them but later told her aunt she was assaulted by Carman. She was taken to Windber Medical Center to have a sexual assault kit performed, police said.
Police and Assistant District Attorney Beth Bolton Penna conducted an interview at the hospital later that day, police said, and were told by the victim that she and Carman contacted each other using cellphones and Facebook to arrange meeting times.
Police said the victim described the assaults, including intercourse and oral sex.
The victim told police the alleged assaults always took place at Carman’s home.
Police said she was able to accurately describe several of the home’s rooms.
Police said when Carman was arrested Tuesday, he confessed to the assaults both verbally and in writing.
According to a criminal complaint, Officer Donald Wyar said Carman told him, “He did know about the victim’s state of mind and her age and stated that he knew it was wrong but did not force her.”
Bonfanti said police received proof of the Facebook messages from the victim’s aunt and later executed a warrant on Carman’s property and seized more evidence.
The investigation is ongoing, he said.
Carman faces 53 charges, including multiple counts of rape of a mentally disabled person, aggravated indecent assault and indecent
assault by forcible compulsion.
He is also charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and corruption of minors.
As of Thursday, Carman was still in the Cambria County jail on 10 percent of a $100,000 bond.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday in front of Magisterial District Judge Michael Musulin.
