Two killed in violent crash

Two Altoona residents died early Sunday when their vehicle, speeding east on the 1200 block of Sixth Avenue, went out of control and rolled over after hitting a tree, another car, a home and a shed.

Jim Coble II of 1207 Sixth Ave. was about to lie down at 1:32 a.m. when, he said, he heard a “boom.”

It sounded to him like something hitting a Dumpster, or someone tossing glass and metal into a trash bin.

As he soon found out when he went outside the house to see what had happened, the “boom” came from a silver Mazda Tribute driven by 29-year-old Heather Mozley that had gone out of control and left the highway.

Altoona police said Mozley and a passenger in the vehicle, Zachary Reed, 22, died.

Blair County Coroner Patricia Ross reported the two died from blunt force trauma. Deputy Coroner Jeff Guyer investigated the incident for the coroner’s office, she said.

Altoona police assigned Sgt. Dan DeAntonio to reconstruct the accident to determine the specifics of what happened on what is a straight and level stretch of highway through a residential and commercial area of the city.

Police are asking anyone who has knowledge of the fatal crash to contact DeAntonio.

The accident occurred a block from the Altoona Area School District campus that includes a junior high school, senior high school, athletic complex and an elementary school.

While the road is busy during the day, at 1.30 a.m it is quiet, said Coble.

Police said high speed and alcohol may have contributed to the crash.

The vehicle was eastbound when it hit a parked vehicle, pushing it 23 feet. It traveled along the sidewalk, striking a residence. It then rotated and became airborne and slid into a utility pole and a shed at the beginning of the 1100 block. Coble said the vehicle was smoking after the crash and that the Jaws of Life were used to extricate the occupants of the vehicle.

A tree in front of his house had to be removed a while glass from the accident had been pushed to the curb. Metal railing dislodged during the crash was lying against a house several door away from the Coble residence.
