One dead in Cambria crash
EBENSBURG – State police in Ebensburg reported that a 21-year-old passenger in a car that crashed early Sunday on Route 53 has died.
The named of the deceased from Beaverdale was being withheld pending notification of his family, police said.
Police identified the driver of the vehicle, a new Chevrolet Equinox, as Zeth D. Markel, also of Beaverdale.
The car was traveling north on Route 53, Portage Street, near Tunnel Street in Summerhill Township, Cambria County, attempting to negotiate a left curve when it went out of control and went off the road into an embankment.
It went airborne and began to roll over when it landed.
The 21-year-old was ejected from the car.
He was pronounced dead at the scene by Cambria County Coroner Dennis Kwiatkowski.
The driver was taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown, for treatment.
Neither man was using a seatbelt.
Police said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, but the investigation would continue pending the outcome of toxicology tests.
