Shooting at tavern sends man to hospital

DEAN – A late-night shooting at George’s Tavern along Route 53 in Dean Township left one man injured, according to state police at Ebensburg.

Police said Robert Edgar Jr., 30, of Coalport was shot in the hip Wednesday evening around 11:30 p.m. when an unknown person, or persons, fired one or more guns from outside the building along 2180 Clearfield Valley Blvd. in Dean, about halfway between Frugality and Dysart.

Edgar, who police said was standing at the bar inside George’s Tavern, was struck in the hip when a bullet passed through a wall.

He was transported to UPMC Altoona with moderate injuries, and the shooter or shooters fled.

Police said the investigation is ongoing, but that Edgar is in stable condition.

“It happened right here,” said a woman who, along with a handful of other customers, was sitting on a barstool at George’s Tavern Thursday afternoon.

The bartender declined to comment on the shooting.

Wednesday night’s attempted homicide occurred less than seven miles from last month’s quadruple homicide along Bottom Road in Ashville after a home invasion Sept. 27.

Police said Josephine Ruckinger, and her husband, Jeffrey Ruckinger of Blandburg, shot and killed Josephine’s mother and brother at her parents’ home before her father, John Frew Sr., returned fire, killing his son-in-law and mortally wounding his daughter, who died later at UPMC Altoona.
