Rep. Dick Hess dies

State Rep. Dick Hess, R-Bedford, died today at a Pittsburgh hospital, House Republican leaders confirmed in a statement.

Hess, 74, died in UPMC Shadyside from complications related to leg surgery, Speaker of the House Sam Smith said.

Hess had served in the House since 1987 and headed the influential House Transportation Committee.

“A devoted family man, Dick will be missed by many more than those of us in the state House,” Smith said. “His loss will be felt throughout the 78th Legislative District, from constituents, to the schools and many service organizations he belonged to. He’s been a tireless public servant and truly helped so many people.”

Hess represented parts of Bedford, Huntingdon and Fulton counties.
