Accused purse thief faces more charges

A man accused of snatching purses in Bellwood and Tyrone faces more charges.

Walter R. Henderson, 32, of 2120 19th St. is charged by Altoona police with stealing two purses from Holiday Hair, 525 E. 25th Ave., the afternoon of July 22.

According to police, Henderson walked into the hair salon around 1:10 p.m. and told the employees he was waiting for his girlfriend. After about 20 minutes, Henderson allegedly walked into a back room at the business and took two purses before fleeing in a white van.

Surveillance from a business allegedly caught Henderson tossing the purses in a trash bin on the 400 block of Maple Avenue Alley, arrest papers show. The purses were recovered but were ruined because of rain. The loss in the theft is estimated at $1,000 for the two purses and their contents, police added.

Henderson was arrested along with a juvenile on July 26 in Patton Township, Centre County, after attempting to use a stolen bank card to buy electronics following two purse snatchings in Northern Blair County. Henderson waived charges related to one of the alleged incidents in Bellwood on to Blair County Court last week but still faces a preliminary hearing on charges stemming from the theft of a purse in Tyrone.

Additionally, state police in Philipsburg allege Henderson stole two purses from vehicles at Lykens’ Market in Port Matilda in late July.

Henderson remains in Blair County Prison on $1,500 cash bail with a hearing on the latest charges slated for Sept. 4.
