Police: Man stashed drugs in woods after crashing

EBENSBURG – Police investigating an early morning vehicle crash discovered a cache of drugs and cash allegedly hidden by the driver in a nearby wooded area.

Cory Wayne Becker, 22, of 4105 Fifth Ave., Altoona, was arrested Saturday, one day after crashing his vehicle on Route 22 in Cambria Township, police said.

Police said Becker lost control of his vehicle at about 2:52 a.m. Friday while heading east and crashed into a ditch along the road.

Police accused Becker of stashing about half a pound of marijuana, prescription pills and about $8,000 in cash in a locked box in a wooded area adjacent to the roadway, police said.

Officers responding to the crash early Friday morning reported Becker ran out of the woods, yelling to police that it was his vehicle. Police discovered about $100 on his person.

Becker was brought in for questioning Saturday after police searched the crash site and discovered a lockbox in the weeds, according to the charges. Police said when an officer picked up the unlocked box, its contents – including the drugs, cash and a backpack that contained Becker’s ID – spilled out. Police also found a baseball autographed by Pete Rose and a watch in the lockbox.

Becker was arraigned through the Cambria County Central Booking Center and jailed on 10 percent of $100,000 bail.
