Police: Man injured after bridge jump

A man sustained injuries after jumping from Juniata’s Eighth Street bridge onto Norfolk Southern train tracks Tuesday afternoon.

The jumper fell 100 feet, police said.

Logan Township Police Chief Ron Heller said he was told the man was alive, but Heller had few details about the incident because UPMC Altoona, abiding by laws protecting patient privacy, declined to release information.

Word spread quickly about the incident as a person ran into the Sheetz at Eighth Street and Old Sixth Avenue Road saying that someone jumped off a bridge, according to Logan Township Police Officer Chris Bender.

Bender said an off-duty Logan Township police officer was in the Sheetz store at the time.

“All I can say is he jumped off the bridge on purpose,” Bender said. “He’s OK.”

Saying that he spoke with a witness, Heller called the jump an attempted suicide.

Altoona police also responded to the bridge following the jump, but the man already had been transported to UPMC Altoona when they arrived. Norfolk Southern officers had no comment on the incident.
