Police: Helmetless biker hits rail

An AMED ambulance transported a man who suffered injuries in a motorcycle crash to UPMC Altoona Friday afternoon. The driver, not identified by state police, hit a guardrail as he navigated a downhill turn on the winding Kettle Road in Tyrone Township.

“He would not have suffered the severe injuries he has, if he was wearing a helmet,” state police Trooper William Wagner said. Pennsylvania law does not require riders to wear helmets, he noted.

The man’s Yamaha Royal Star slid for about 40 feet to the middle of the road after colliding with the guardrail.

Sinking Valley volunteer firefighters closed the road while state police, assisted by Logan Township police, investigated the scene of the accident. An AMED responder said the man was “stable.”
