Eichenlaub gets 11 1/2 months for role in bar fight

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Former Altoona police officer Duane Eichenlaub was sentenced Tuesday to 11 1/2 to 23 months in Blair County Prison for his role in the bar brawl on Memorial Day weekend 2010.

Judge Timothy M. Sullivan also sentenced Eichenlaub to three years’ probation and 100 hours of community service.

Eichenlaub was convicted of aggravated assault and obstruction of justice by a Blair County jury on Jan. 24.

Testimony during the trial showed that Eichenlaub was incensed because a bar patron, Herman “Bo” Lardieri, allegedly had improperly touched Eichenlaub’s wife.

When Eichenlaub heard what happened, he proceeded into the men’s room and confronted Lardieri, who denied he did anything.

Another off-duty officer, Eric R. Kriner, joined Eichenlaub, and the two began hitting Lardieri, according to testimony.

Earl P. Eshelman, 59, who had been in the restroom, saw what was happening. Eshelman told the jury he tried to pull Eichenlaub off Lardieri. Eichenlaub is alleged to have struck Eshelman repeatedly about the face.
