Sheetz hopes to build store near Altoona Regional hospital
Sheetz Inc. plans to build a convenience store on the 700 block of Chestnut Avenue in Altoona.
“We have an agreement with a local developer. We are in the very preliminary stages to build a store at that location,” said Steve Augustine, Sheetz director of real estate.
Sheetz has an agreement to lease the property on a long-term basis with 5 Investments LLC, “assuming we receive all permits and approvals,” Augustine said.
5 Investments LLC had planned to build a Walgreen’s drug store at that location, but those plans fell through last spring.
Augustine said it will take Sheetz 10 to 12 months to get all of the approvals needed to move forward with the project. Once the approvals are obtained, Sheetz would slot the project into its construction schedule.
Robert Gutshall, chairman of the Altoona Planning Commission, doesn’t anticipate any problems with the Sheetz plan.
“It [the [parcel] is zoned light industrial. It is certainly large enough. There should be more than enough room,” Gutshall said.
Meanwhile, plans are moving along with three other local Sheetz projects:
– Work has begun to clear the site for a new Sheetz store at Frankstown Road and Amelia Avenue. Building footers are projected to start going in sometime in June, with an October store opening, Augustine said.
– Sheetz has received final approval from the Borough of Hollidaysburg to rebuild its Blair Street store, which was built in 1994. The company is waiting on the final highway occupancy permit from PennDOT for the project, which is to be completed in late 2014, Augustine said.
– For the third project, Sheetz is working on finalizing a site plan through its civil engineering consultant for the rebuild of the store at Route 865 near the Bellwood interchange of Interstate 99 in Antis Township. Plans for the project will be submitted to the township in May, and Sheetz hopes to receive final approvals by late summer. A construction start date has yet to be determined, Augustine said.
