AASD coach’s actions under review

Allegations against an Altoona Area School District coach has sparked a police investigation.

“We have initiated a joint investigation with the Altoona Area School District Police and the Altoona Police Department against allegations of misconduct of an assistant sports coach no longer active in the district,” district spokeswoman Paula Foreman said Friday.

Foreman said the inactive coach is not a teacher.

She declined to say how long the employee has been inactive, when allegations came to light or what sport the coach helped supervise.

Altoona Police Chief Janice Freehling confirmed the launch of the investigation but declined to provide further details.

“Our investigation is in a preliminary stage, and there is nothing further to report at this time,” Freehling said Friday.

School board President Ryan Beers said he does not have all the details of the investigation.

He said assistant coaches are part-time employees hired on an annual basis. Coaches who are not teachers and are not in season are not active employees of the district.

No coaches have been reviewed or approved for next year in any sport, Beers said.

Mirror sources said Altoona teachers were briefed during a meeting Thursday about the allegations, but Foreman did not confirm that.

Teacher union President Doug Rosenberry did not return a phone call about reports of a meeting.
