Peoples requests rate reduction

Peoples Natural Gas has filed a request with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission to decrease natural gas rates, as of Oct. 1.

The company has requested an overall combined rate decrease of $39 million per year.

If the company’s entire request is approved, the total bill for a Peoples Division residential customer using 86 thousand cubic feet per year would decrease from $81.32 to $75.54 per month, or by

7.1 percent.

Every March the company is required by the commission to project what the cost of gas will be.

The proposed change is subject to examination by the PUC, which will schedule hearings to determine the proper rate level to be charged.

Peoples serves about 31,200 customers in Blair County, and 736,000 customers in 18 western Pennsylvania counties and parts of West Virginia and Kentucky.
