Kunzler $4M expansion could result in new jobs

TYRONE — Kunzler & Co. is ready to move forward with its $4 million expansion project, which could result in 16 to 20 new jobs.

Snyder Township supervisors Wednesday gave conditional approval to plans for a building expansion project as well as a parking lot expansion. The approval will be final upon the signatures of Kunzler officials and then the supervisors, said solicitor David Pertile.

Kunzler recently received its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit from the state Department of Environmental Protection.

“We are glad for the opportunity to get started as soon as possible. We hope to move dirt on Monday. We hope to be in the building by the end of the year,” said Dave Grazier, the plant’s general manager.

The project, which is needed for Kunzler’s growing bacon business, calls for a 10,694-square-foot addition and a 3,000-square-foot loading dock.

In addition to the expansion, a gravel parking lot, concrete loading pad area, concrete sidewalks adjacent to the proposed structure, a paved access driveway and stormwater management facilities will be constructed.

Completion of the project will enable Kunzler to increase its bacon production by 5 million to 8 million pounds a year.

Kunzler had hoped to start on the project last May or June, but the lack of the NPDES permit held up the project.

Township supervisors are pleased to see the project move forward.

“We support any business that wants to grow. We want to support them in any way we can. We are glad to see any expansion in the township,” Chairman Jim Kost said.

Leonard S. Fiore Inc. will be the general contractor for the project.
