What products or services does your company provide?
We work with various retirement plans, including 401(k)s for businesses and IRAs for individual clients, and our team services nonqualified accounts, as well. We offer a unique approach to group health care through a group medical captive, and we also serve as the broker for traditional healthcare plans, including Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap policies). We assist with life insurance planning for our clients and their families.
Who are your customers?
Our business supports both individual investors and businesses.
What is your business day like?
I get to spend my day building relationships with our retirement plan sponsors and participants. Together, we stress the importance of 401(k) participants saving more and gradually increasing their contributions to the plan so that retirement is more attainable and enjoyable. I love to watch our clients transition from working every day to working whenever they want (if they want). One of my favorite clients calls me every week just to chat, and hearing his funny stories is the highlight of my day.
What is the best business advice you have received?
You don’t know what you don’t know. There is incredible value in expanding your expertise and skill set. Never stop learning, and never think you know it all. If someone says something can’t be done, it’s most likely not because it cannot literally be done; it’s because the resolution might be too cumbersome or tedious. Ask the person, “I can’t or you won’t?” You decide whether the juice is worth the squeeze once you can see the full picture. Don’t take “no” as the first answer.
What is the most important thing you’ve learned on the job?
Be yourself. People can tell if you’re trying to impress them or be something you’re not. Be funny and approachable, and people will want to work with you. It’s easy to sell your real self.
What does the future hold?
We have a busy year ahead of us! Our team is helping companies take control of their health care costs by introducing a group medical captive approach. We’ve seen this solution cut costs for our existing clients, and we’re excited to help the small business owners in our community. We also have group education meetings set with our 401(k) clients and look forward to urging all the participants to boost their savings.
