A local businessman will be honored as the 2017 Person of the Year by the Blair Bedford Central Labor Council.

Shawn P. McCarl, president and CEO of S.P. McCarl and Co. Inc., will be honored Sept. 14 at the 37th Annual Person of the Year Awards Dinner at the Bavarian Hall in Altoona.

McCarl was nominated by business agent Don Arena of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 354, said Robert Kutz, labor council president.

McCarl has served as the commissioner of the Hollidaysburg Area Youth Football Association and led the effort to install artificial turf at Tiger Stadium.

He serves on the board of his church, the Hollidaysburg Area School District Foundation and Leadership Blair County.

Russell

“He is very active in the community and serves on different boards, and he employs a lot of people,” Kutz said.

McCarl said he was humbled by the award.

“Our family has partnered with labor since 1946. My dad and my oldest brother both have received recognition in the Pittsburgh area for their contributions to labor organizations. So, for me to get the call about receiving this honor was special, and I know my father would be proud that we continue his legacy by working hand in hand with labor day in and day out,” McCarl said.

The labor council will present the 2017 Labor Award to Todd Russell of the Hollidaysburg Area Education Association.

Russell is a chemistry and biology teacher at Hollidaysburg Area Junior High School and is a cluster liaison for the Pennsylvania State Education Association.

Miller

Russell also serves as his local’s second vice president and Political Action Committee for Education chair, and he’s the Central Region PACE chair and is the treasurer on the PACE Board. He is very active in the Sons of the American Legion Post 653 in South Fork.

“I am very honored to be nominated and to receive this award, but it is not just me. I will accept it for me and the rest of the outreach team,” Russell said.

The Humanitarian Award will be presented to Trudy Miller, a longtime volunteer at Contact Altoona. She was nominated for the award by Gary Reid, board president.

“Trudy will do anything you ask of her, and she does it with a smile. She is an awesome person, fantastic to work with, and she is just a wonderful person,” Reid said.

Miller enjoys her volunteer work.

“I don’t know if I am deserving, but it is wonderful. It is an honor. It is something that I like to do, and I feel it is a needed service here in Blair County,” Miller said.
