What products or services does your company provide?

Tax, accounting, business consulting and financial planning

Who are your customers?

Diverse array of small businesses from mom and pop companies to large firms. I also work with startup companies and help existing companies finance expansions, my biggest passion. During tax season, we do about 200 individual tax returns for nonbusiness-related clients.

What is your business day like?

I do not have a set business day. My primary focus is on the needs of my clients. But I also own or am part owner of several startup businesses including a medical billing company and an industrial equipment rental company. All of these take varying amounts of my time.

I also am involved in several community organizations. I am a Leadership Blair County Alumni, a member of the Altoona Rotary Club, actively involved in the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen and I am on the boards of the Mishler Theatre and Hollidaysburg Community Partnership.

What is the best business advice you have received?

Be in control of your own destiny.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned on the job?

You need to listen. For the most part, there are no cookie cutter solutions. I like to ask people when they come in to my office with a problem, “What is YOUR objective?” I like to solve problems from the bottom up. Determine the desired outcome and try to find a path to that outcome.

What does the future hold?

I have a positive outlook on life and I am a young 60. I want to stay the course. I can see myself doing what I do now for another 10 years, God willing.

What have you read lately that has influenced your business life?

“Zero to One” by PayPal founder Peter Thiel.
