Local woman honored for volunteer work

Volunteers often go about their work without seeking attention.

“She said can’t you just mail it to me,” said Blair County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Joe Hurd at the Chamber Breakfast Club Thursday honoring Ruth Weaver as the 2014 George Award winner.

Weaver, 90, of Hollidaysburg was presented with the award given annually to a resident of Blair County who has improved the quality of the community through his or her volunteer efforts.

Weaver is a former trust officer with Hollidaysburg Trust Co. and an active volunteer for several area nonprofits.

She served as treasurer/ assistant treasurer for Hollidaysburg Holy Trinity Episcopal Church for 45 years and served for more than 50 years as a designated driver for people in need of transportation for appointments or surgery at the former Altoona Regional hospital.

She also was instrumental in starting a homeless shelter through the Altoona YMCA while serving on the board, said president and CEO Patricia Savage of Allegheny Lutheran Social ministries, which sponsors the award.

“Blair County is blessed with hundreds of willing volunteers who take on multi-assignments. Our honoree fits the description of the George Award. Our honoree is a full-time volunteer who provides service with humility and grace,” Savage said.

Weaver thanked the chamber and accepted the award.

“It is so good to see so many of my friends and certainly my older friends I don’t get to see too often. At my age, it is good to see anyone,” Weaver said. “I am grateful to God to be given 90 healthy years to raise my family and do what I really enjoy doing – volunteering.”

“You are a very special person in the community,” Hurd said. “The Ruth Weavers of the world – there doesn’t seem to be enough of them – thank you for everything that you are doing.”
