New, larger Meadows hopes to open Easter weekend

DUNCANSVILLE – The Meadows Original Frozen Custard soon will be open in a new and larger building.

“We are striving for Easter weekend,” said partner Joel Meadows.

The original 1,500-square-foot building, built in 1950, was demolished to make way for the new 2,500-square-foot structure, which is about 20 feet behind where the old building was located. The new Meadows includes a drive through.

The Meadows closed Nov. 1, the first time it was closed in about 25 years. They had hoped to reopen in February.

“We lost a few weeks due to the weather,” Meadows said. “The cold held us up. It was a brutal winter,” Meadows said. “It was a good time to be closed if you are selling frozen custard; it was brutal for construction.”

When PennDOT completed a redesign of the Meadows intersection about 10 years ago, the business lost about 18 feet of parking along old Route 220. By moving the building back, 15 new parking spaces have been created, Meadows said.

The drive-though window could lead to an increase in business.

“Of all the stores we have – we have 30 – all those that have a drive-through do about 50 percent of their business through the drive through. I would hope it will lead to increased business,” Meadows said.

The new building looks very similar to the old one and will seat 36. The miniature golf course, batting cages and the yard with the adirondack chairs will remain the same.

Meadows has been important to the local business community, said Joe Hurd, president and CEO of the Blair County Chamber of Commerce.

“Anytime a community is able to have access to a business like Meadows for more than six decades, that community should consider itself extremely fortunate,” Hurd said. “The real strength of the Blair County business community has been the large number of family businesses that start here and grow here. Meadows is a classic example of that.”

Lou Ventura was the general contractor for the more than $500,000 project, Meadows said.
