Police: Jeep stolen for getaway

From Mirror staff reports

A Tyrone man is behind bars after he allegedly stole a Jeep to flee a store where he’d been caught shoplifting, according to police.

Shane A. Snyder, 32, 306 Teaberry St., was arrested about an hour after police were called to Kohl’s in the Logan Town Centre for a report of a shoplifter who had slipped away from store personnel about 6 p.m. Thursday, police said.

After getting a description of a suspect, Logan Township police were flagged down by a woman outside Kohl’s who told them Snyder had stolen her Jeep Compass.

According to police, the two were in Kohl’s shopping, and she gave Snyder her keys so he could retrieve her phone from the Jeep. When she walked out of the store, the Jeep was gone, she told police.

The Jeep was a company car, police said, and its owner wanted it reported stolen when he was contacted by officers.

Police said Snyder was ultimately found just before 7 p.m. in the parking lot of the Aldi grocery store and taken into custody.

Snyder also allegedly stole two watches, an Angry Birds watch and a Zoo York watch, while at Kohl’s. Police said store personnel said they watched Snyder take the watches from one area of the store to another where he ripped open their packaging and hid them in his coat. After Snyder walked out of the store, he was confronted and escorted to the loss prevention office where he refused to produce identification. When he was told police were on their way, Snyder allegedly pulled the watches from his coat and fled, police said.

Snyder is charged with felony theft and related counts and remains in Blair County Prison after failing to post $15,000 cash bail set by Magisterial District Judge Fred Miller. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday before Magisterial District Judge Steven Jackson.
