Days Inn planned for Pinecroft

A new Days Inn hotel is expected to be open for business this summer on Sabbath Rest Road near the Pinecroft interchange of Interstate 99.

“We are shooting for an August opening,” said Sam McCloskey, managing member of McCloskey Real Estate Group, Altoona, which will own the hotel, and owner of McCloskey Builders, which will be the contractor for the project.

Plans call for a 30,000-square-foot, three-story facility with 54 rooms and 62 parking spaces. The room mix will consist of single and double rooms as well as suites. The hotel will also have several suites designed for extended stays or large families, McCloskey said.

The hotel will be constructed based on a new design by Days Inn, McCloskey said.

The hotel will feature a fitness center, meeting rooms and a dining area for breakfast.

Days Inn is one of 14 brands that fall under the Wyndham Hotel Group. The hotels are independently owned and operated, and the sites are selected by the owner/developer.

“Days Inn is an iconic brand. Days Inn is very excited for the opportunity to expand into the Altoona area,” said Lou Reda, director of development and new construction.

McCloskey said he conducted a feasibility study before deciding to embark on the project. He had previously started work on the site in 2011 for a 20,000-square-foot Pinecroft Commons designed to house office space or retail tenants. A foundation is already in place.

“We thought economy-wise this made more sense. There is a lot of empty space in the area and it didn’t make sense to build another office building,” McCloskey said.

Work on the project, which is expected to accelerate next week, should create about 15 jobs during construction and between 12 and 16 full-time jobs when the hotel is up and running, Reda said.

A hospitality management company, Sky Hospitality Group of Florida, will oversee operation of the new hotel, McCloskey said.
