Student is Freshman Princess for homecoming
ELKINS, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins College student Olivia Smith of Martinsburg was chosen Freshman Princess as a representative on the college’s homecoming court.
The court was officially presented Oct. 13 during Homecoming, Sena-tor Nation and Family Weekend.
Smith is the the daughter of Lon and Kathy Smith of Martinsburg.
Student part of team in forensics tournament
BLOOMSBURG — The Blooms-burg University of Pennsylvania forensics team captured the third-place Sweepstakes Award at the Collegiate Forensic Association’s annual fall tournament held at Shepherd University in Shepherds-town, W.Va., on Oct. 19 and 20.
Eleven out of the 18 BU students won awards, including first and second place in parliamentary debate in a field of 21 teams.
Isaac Osborn of Ebensburg competed for BU in the event.
Neil Strine, director of forensics, and Michael Martin, associate professor of English, served as speech and debate judges for Bloomsburg at the tournament. Erin Brummett, assistant professor of communication studies, assisted with coaching students on the team.
Student receives Heroes’ Legacy Scholarship
Taylor Baum of Hollidaysburg is a winner in the Heroes’ Legacy Scholarships For Children of Fallen or Disabled Service Members.
The scholarship grants for this special program are principally underwritten by the authors after tax proceeds from the book “Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to my Daughters” written by President Barack Obama, as well as corporate sponsorships and private donations.
Taylor is the child of Ronald Baum. She attends Penn State University majoring in biology and electrical engineering.
Taylor was part of a medical service trip to Honduras and is a biology learning assistant. She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma and Sigma Aloha Phi and part of EEG Brain Controlled Wheelchair Research.
