Student joins Alpha Chi honor society

PHILADELPHIA — Owen Vazquez was among the 41 newest members inducted into the University of the Sciences Pennsylvania Kappa Chapter of the Alpha Chi National Honor Society, at a special ceremony held on Nov. 14.

Vazquez is a biochemistry student from Duncansville.

During the ceremony, inductees were introduced by their faculty advisers or department chairs who highlighted each student’s accomplishments.

Students receive ACM tuition vouchers

EVERETT — Five prospective Allegany College of Maryland students were awarded tuition vouchers totaling $1,500 at the Bedford County Campus of ACM’s recent open house.

The vouchers, provided by the Bedford County Regional Education Foundation, were presented by random drawing at the 21st annual campus event.

They include

n Sitara Sandhu, a Bedford resident and Bedford High School junior interested in accounting and business ($500).

n Lilian Kendall, a Riddlesburg resident and PA Cyber Charter School senior ($300).

n Spencer Hood, an Artemas resident and Everett Area High School junior ($200).

n Mark Mitchell of Altoona ($300).

n Hannah Leppert, a Schellsburg resident and Chestnut Ridge High School junior interested in business management ($200).

Bedford foundation awards scholarship

EVERETT — The Bedford County Regional Educational Foundation has announced that 11 area Allegany College of Maryland students are among recipients of community-sponsored scholarships for study at the Bedford County Campus of ACM in the fall 2017 semester.

n Emilee Bollman of Imler was awarded a Pay It Forward Scholarship. Interested in early childhood education, Bollman is a Chestnut Ridge High School senior taking ACM courses through the Early College program. She is the daughter of Rebecca Bollman.

n Autumn Conley of Everett received the Bedford County Human Service Council Scholarship. She is a human service associate major. A 2014 graduate of Everett Area High School who works as a waitress and nanny. She is the daughter of Wendy and Bradley Conley.

n Nicole Costal of Manns Choice was awarded the Kelly and Larry Myers Scholarship. A licensed practical nurse, she is a nursing major. Costal works as an LPN and MDS coordinator at Penn Knoll Village. A 1992 graduate of Bedford High School, she completed LPN training at the Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center in 2002. She and her husband, Randy, are the parents of two children, Uriah and Rebekah.

n Lexie Gordon of New Paris was awarded the Lois and Tom Stoner Scholarship. A certified medical assistant, Gordon is a nursing major. A 2007 graduate of Chestnut Ridge High School, Gordon completed the medical assistant program at YTI Career Institute in 2009 and worked six years in gastroenterology and orthopedics practices. She and her husband, Blair, are the parents of a son, Emmett.

n Talita Mirfin of Everett was awarded the Dr. Jim Snider Bedford County Campus Scholarship. She is a business administration major. A Brazil native who graduated from high school in 2006, she currently works as a waitress. She is married to Michael Mirfin.

n Cameron Painter of Breezewood was awarded a Pennsylvania Student Scholarship. A nursing major, his experience includes the Bedford Area and Raystown ambulance services and the Fulton County Medical Center. A 2014 graduate of Everett Area High School, he is the son of Phil and Jen Replogle Painter.

n Elizabeth Steele of New Enterprise was awarded a Pay It Forward Scholarship. She is a dental hygiene major. A 2002 graduate of Northern Bedford County High School, she’s worked as a bus driver for Leidy Transportation, Hopewell. She is the daughter of David and Maclyn Steele.

Virginia Tech student joins honor society

BATON ROUGE, La. — Joshua Penrod of Schellsburg was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Penrod was initiated at Virginia Tech.

Penrod is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year.

Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
