Blair County Tea Party presents scholarship

The Blair County Tea Party awarded its third Patriot Scholar-ship to Michael Elder, a senior at Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School, at its Freedom Fest event on May 12.

Elder plans to attend York

College and study engineering this fall.

The Patriot Scholarship is a $1,000 award.

Elder and applicants from several Blair County schools wrote an essay on the topic “What is the Greatest Threat to Your Constitutional Rights?” Elder’s essay argued that judicial activism is the primary threat to our freedoms.

Elder and Jarrod Piper were chosen as finalists, based on the strength of their essays. They were then invited to be interviewed by the board of the BCTP.

Elder was selected as the winner as a result of his interview and his contributions to the community.

In addition to being active with St. Michael the Archangel and his cross country team, Elder earned his Eagle Scout award.

His project was designing, raising funds for and performing much of the labor to build a flag retirement ceremonial patio for Duncansville VFW Post 8724.
