Across the area

Courtesy photo “I’ve been in Guam for over a year and a half now, and I think it’s the perfect place for an adventuring submariner like me,” said Machinists Mate (Auxiliary) 3rd Class Caleb Harclerode of Altoona, assigned to USS Asheville (SSN 758). “It’s a good place to venture outside and explore the area after working in a submarine that’s so compact. I love the opportunity to be able to do my favorite outdoor sports, swim and hike here.”

Myers to kick off stocking ministry

BELLWOOD — Myers Elementary School will again partner with Military Families Ministry to send stockings to deployed service members this year.

This school-wide service project will be launched during a school assembly at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday at Myers Elementary School, where military service members and Terri Harpster, principal, will address the students.

Tuesday has been declared Red, White and Blue Day for the kick-off assembly.

David Plummer, veteran, and his first-grade students will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Other students will sing patriotic songs.

Students, families, faculty and staff will donate all of the items to fill the stockings. Funds donated by local businesses will be used to ship the stockings, and all excess funds raised will be used to make and ship additional care packages for deployed service members.

PTO and other parent volunteers will help students sort the donated items and assist students with the packing of stockings.

Every student will bring their hand-made card for the service members on Dec. 5, then pick items from each box and stuff their own stocking.

Stockings will be shipped to deployed military service members, prioritizing service members and their units who have connections to students at Myers Elementary School or Bellwood-Antis community members.
