Tea, basket event to aid Haiti ministry

The Carmelite Community of the Word will hold a Harvest Tea and Basket Auction to benefit its Hands & Hearts Haiti Ministry.

The event will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 24 at St. Patrick’s School Hall, Newry.

The public is invited to join in the effort to lend support to the people of Haiti. Help by donating an item, providing financial support for the tea and basket auction or by attending the event. The deadline for donations is Oct. 1.

Tickets are $15 per person before Nov. 1 and $18 per person after Nov. 1. Payment in full is required with reservation. Send payment with a list of attendees (each table seats 12) to CCW Hands & Hearts Haiti Ministry, 394 Bem Road, Gallitzin, PA 16641.

Mattress sale benefits music program

HOLLIDAYSBURG — If you are you looking to replace a bed in your home, now is the time.

The Hollidaysburg Area Music Parents Association will host its third annual one-day mattress fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

For one day only, the Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School cafeteria will be transformed into a mattress showroom. For information about the sale, go to bit.ly/beds4hampa3rdyr.

There will be 28 different mattress styles on display in all sizes for customers to try, priced below retail.

Adjustable power bases, premium pillows, bed frames and mattress protectors will be available as well.

Brands including Simmons Beautyrest, Souther-land, Restonic and Malouf come with full factory warranties. They are made to order and will be available two to three weeks after the fundraiser. Delivery is available.

Railroaders museum part of free day

The Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum, 1200 Ninth Ave., will open its doors free of charge to all Museum Day ticket holders Saturday as part of Smithsonian magazine’s 15th annual Museum Day.

It is a national celebration of boundless curiosity in which participating museums emulate the free admission policy at the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based museums.

Visitors who present a Museum Day ticket will gain free entrance for two at the Railroaders Memorial Museum (does not include the Horseshoe Curve NHL) on Saturday.

CAST offers youth acting classes

CLEARFIELD — The Clearfield Arts Studio Theatre Inc. (CAST) will offer Saturday acting classes for area youth. The classes will run Saturdays from Sept. 28 through Nov. 16.

Classes for students in grades three to six will be held from 10 to 11 a.m.; grades seven through nine will be from 11 a.m. to noon.; grades 10 through 12 will be from noon to 1 p.m.

These acting classes, under the direction of CAST Artistic Director Gayle Gearhart, will focus on theatrics, character development and audition techniques, and prepare students for future performances at CAST. Older students will also work with Shakespeare.

The cost is $30 per student. Students can be registered at the CAST office from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mon-days or at the first session.

Contra, country dance is Friday

BOALSBURG — The Central Pennsylvania Country Dance Association will hold its first Contra and Old Time Country Dance of the season from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday at the Boalsburg Fire Hall, 113 E. Pine St.

All dances are taught and easy to learn. No partner is needed, and no experience is necessary.

Hilton Baxter of Harrisburg will call dances to the music of Contra Intuitive.
