Friends of Rose Hill sets open house

The Friends of Rose Hill Cemetery will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 21 at the cemetery. The event will be held rain or shine.

The Friends will show the progress the group has made, and participants can learn how to help the Friends continue to maintain and restore the cemetery. Light refreshments will be available.

Lace Up for Life set for Sept. 28

The American Cancer Society will hold its inaugural Lace Up for Life 5K Run/Walk Event at 9 a.m. Sept. 28 at Canoe Creek State Park, Pavilion No. 2

Registration is $25 if completed by Saturday or $30 after that.

Glendale choir to hold barbecue

IRVONA — Lawrence Putorek, director of the Glendale High School choir, announced that a barbecue chicken dinner fundraiser is planned for noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 22 at Elderberry Park in Irvona.

For a $10 donation, attendees receive a half chicken, two sides, roll and dessert. Participants can eat in or take out. In addition, patrons can purchase chances on Steelers tickets, 50/50 raffle tickets, baked goods and drinks.

Cleanup, ‘Find-a-Grave’ project set

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will sponsor a service project at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Altoona. The cemetery is at the top of 10th Street.

The project is two-fold:

n Volunteers will work on pulling weeds, cutting grass and general clean-up.

n Secondly, and just as important, participants will have the option of taking pictures of individual gravestones to upload to the “Find-a-Grave” site. The site’s mission is to help people from all over the world work together to find, record and present final disposition information as a virtual cemetery experience.

DESA to meet in Martinsburg

MARTINSBURG — Horseshoe Curve Chapter 37 Destroyer Escort Sailors Association will meet Sept. 19 at the Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Company, 205 S. Market St.

The cost of the noon meeting followed by a luncheon is $15, which includes a $3 donation to the fire hall.

The guest speaker will be Tammy Wholever, who has 20 years in the U.S. Army and currently works in the VA Pharmacy. Her topic will recognizing who served.

The 2020 dues are $10 per year or $50 for a life membership. Dues can be paid at this meeting or sent to Bob Guyer, P.O. Box 129, Woodbury, PA 16695.
