VFW seeks golfers for tournament

Duncansville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8724 is seeking participants for its 10th annual golf scramble, which will be held Aug. 17 at Sylvan Hills Country Club, Hollidaysburg, with a 9 a.m. tee-off.

Proceeds will benefit the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home Activities Fund.

Registration is $60 per person. The fee includes 18 holes of golf with a car, beverages on the course and tickets to win cash and prizes at the dinner held immediately following the scramble at the VFW.

Organizers also are looking for hole sponsors. A $50 donation will get recognized on the tee box of choice. A $100 donation includes hole sponsorship and Facebook recognition.

Girl Scouts to mark S’mores Day

Saturday is National S’mores Day, and Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania invites all girls in kindergarten through 12th grade and their families to celebrate at special events this week across western Pennsylvania.

Local events will be held at the following locations:

n 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Allegheny Portage National Railroad, 201 Maintenance Drive.

n 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Canoe Creek Education Center Pavilion, 205 Canoe Creek Road.

Attendees will make S’mores, enjoy fun activities and learn more about Girl Scouts and the organization’s mission of building courage, confidence and character in girls.

Council staff or members of local Service Units will be available at the National S’mores Day events to help girls renew or sign up. Those interested in becoming a volunteer are also invited to attend.

Girls currently registered as Girl Scouts and those who register at the event will receive a free National S’mores Day patch. Additionally, Girl Scouts can receive a special “Make S’more Friends” patch by bringing a friend.

Hemlock Harmony Brigade is Aug. 13

The Altoona Horseshoe Chorus will sponsor the Hemlock Harmony Brigade at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at Laurel Lodge Conference Center, 2319 Sugar Run Road, Duncansville.

This event brings together a cappella singers from central Pennsylvania and Maryland.

The event is informal with entertainment by various chorus and quartet groups. It is for anyone interested in singing as a hobby. Organizers would like to hear your group sing at this fun event.

The event is open to the public, but registration is required in order to accommodate all guests.

Foundation offers scholarships

The Alliance College Alumni Association, through the arm of its 501(c)3 foundation, is accepting applications for its annual scholarship.

Graduating high school senior,s as well as students enrolled as full-time students in post-secondary colleges, universities or technical schools, are eligible for the $1,500 award.

Eligible students will have at least a 2.5 academic average. While all majors are considered, preference will be given to an applicant majoring in Polish language, culture or history. Additional preference will be given to applicants related to an Alliance College (or Alliance Technical School) alumnus.

The application is available for download at www.alliancecollege/foundation and must be postmarked no later than Aug. 15.

The recipient will be announced at the Alliance College Alumni Association board meeting and winners will be notified of selection by Oct. 1. The scholarship awarded will be payable to the student’s school on Feb. 1.

On Aug. 25, the Alliance College Alumni will gather for their annual meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn at the Erie Bayfront in Erie. All ACAA alumni, former faculty and friends of Alliance College are encouraged to participate. Details are available at www.alliancecollege.com.

Fly-In/Drive-In breakfast set Aug. 17

PHILIPSBURG — Mid State Airport, (near Black Moshannon State Park) will hold its annual Fly-In/

Drive-In breakfast from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 17.

The airport address is 451 Airport Road, Philipsburg, PA 16866.

Price is $6 for all-you-can-eat breakfast of pancakes, eggs, sausage and toast to benefit the Winburne Volunteer Fire Company.

Pilots, planes and visitors are welcome. There will be games for kids.

Association for Blind sets programs

The Blair/Clearfield Association for the Blind offers weekly opportunities for educational programs and socializing.

All programs are at 10:30 a.m. Unless otherwise stated, programs are held at 300 5th Ave., Altoona.
