Area teen among 71 Girl Scouts to earn Gold Award

Girl Scouts of Western Pennsyl-vania congratulated 71 Girl Scouts, including Amber D. Glass of Coal-port, on earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting.

These girls cumulatively logged more than 5,500 hours of service, while designing and implementing projects to benefit their communities through education and resources.

While each Gold Award Girl Scout pursues an individual project that aligns with her interests or aspirations, each project provides a sustainable solution to the root cause of an issue, including gaps in community resources, youth education opportunities, environmental conservation and several others.

Amber is a graduate of Glendale Junior-Senior High School, Flinton.

She planned a Veteran’s Day Dinner at her local VFW for her Gold Award project.

During the dinner, she mentored younger girls to serve the dinner and take time to talk and listen to the veterans’ stories.

There was a craft workshop before dinner that included the younger members of her Service Unit creating flags out of popsicle sticks for the veterans to take home.

Amber also painted a wooden pallet as an American flag to donate to the Coalport VFW.

The achievements of these 71 Gold Award Girl Scouts were celebrated at two Gold Award Court of Awards ceremonies, one held in May at Chestnut Ridge Golf Resort & Convention Center in Blairsville and the other in June at Pittsburgh Marriott North in Cranberry Township.

For those Girl Scouts who attended a ceremony, a summary of their project was shared while they received their Gold Award pin, which they wear on their Girl Scout uniform to signify the completion of the highest award.

Through earning the Gold Award, Girl Scouts distinguish themselves as community leaders by following their vision and passion to make their corner of the world a better place.

In recognition of this achievement, Gold Award Girl Scouts can benefit from exclusive scholarships from colleges and universities and may enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces at an advanced rank.
