Juniata Civics to meet Tuesday

The Juniata Civic Association met April 2. Plans are being made to participate in the Juniata Memorial Day Parade. Several fundraisers were discussed.

The next meeting will be held Tuesday with social time at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting at 7 p.m.

‘Addiction’ topic of meetings

The Blair Drug and Alcohol Partnerships will provide a free one-hour training for any community member.

“Understanding Addiction” will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday and 5 p.m. May 15 at Blair Drug and Alcohol Partnerships, 3001 Fairway Drive, Suite D, Altoona. Registration is preferred by calling 381-0921.

Historical society to meet Monday

EVERETT — The Bloody Run Historical Society will meet at 6 p.m. Monday at the Everett Railroad and Community Museum on Fifth Street.

The historic exhibit at the Everett Free Library for May is a patriotic one, revisiting the very successful Armed Forces Day celebration there last year, along with other items.

There are military statistical sheets available at the library desk for any area veteran to complete for addition to the Everett Area Veterans Book begun last year and now having more than 100 entries including great service photos.

Sharp Tones to perform May 11

PLEASANTVILLE — The Alum Bank Community Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary will present The Sharp Tones from 6:30 to 10 p.m. May 11.

Admission is $5 per person. The kitchen will open at 5:30 p.m. It is a smoke- and alcohol-free atmosphere.

SAMA Bedford plans workshop series

BEDFORD — The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Bedford announced two workshops coordinated with artists from the current Hands On exhibition.

From 10 a.m. to noon May 11, Kathy Trexel Reed of Somerset will lead a class on the art of papercutting. All tools and supplies will be provided for this workshop. The cost is $45 or $35 for museum members.

Next, Nancy Hershberger of Breezewood will hold a two-day Introduction to Art Quilts workshop at the museum on June 7 and 8. Friday’s session is from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday’s is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Hershberger will share her expertise and provide background on art quilts and how they relate to traditional quilting techniques. Other mediums, including paints and inks, will be incorporated into fabric to create unique pieces. This workshop is $65 or $55 for museum members. There will be an additional $10 kit fee, payable to Hershberger, that covers all tools and material, including access to sewing machines and pressing tools.

Giant yard sale to benefit CMN

CLEARFIELD — A large yard sale event featuring scratch and dent items that could not be sent to the Wal-Mart stores will be held May 10 and 11 to support Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital.

More than 20 tractor trailer loads of items have been donated by the Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Woodland for the event. The event will start at 8 a.m. at the Clearfield County Fairgrounds Expo Building 1 on May 10 and in Expo Building 2 on May 11.

The event will remain open each day until items are sold out.

The funds raised by this event will help to provide pediatric equipment, programs and services at Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital and pediatric services throughout Geisinger Health System.

AAUW to hold book sale May 11-14

STATE COLLEGE — The American Association of University Women State College will hold its 58th annual used book sale from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. May 11 to 14 at the Penn State Snider Ag Arena, 800 E. Park Ave., across from Beaver Stadium and the Central Pennsylvania Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

Only cash or checks will be accepted.

More than 250,000 sorted books, priced to sell, will be available for purchase. This year’s selection includes children’s books, fiction, biographies, newer text books, collectors, sports, hobbies, history, mysteries, comics, sheet music, puzzles, games and more.

May 13 is Half Price Day and May 14 is Bag Day, when a bag of books may be purchased for $7.

Shoppers may take their own bag(s) to fill.

Almost all sale proceeds are used locally for branch projects, for scholarships and for grants to community nonprofits that reflect AAUW’s mission to advance equity for women and girls.
