AASD Foundation establishes two funds

The Gail Scherden Fund

The Gail Scherden Fund has been established as part of the Altoona Area School District Foundation.

The $20,000 Named Endowment was established by Anthony and Carol Jurewicz to honor their sister-in-law Gail (D. Harvey) Scherden and to provide ongoing funding for opportunities to enrich the learning experiences of the Districtás students.

Gail, a 1958 graduate of Altoona High School, has been an active participant in the Altoona High School reunions. “We wanted to honor Gail for her devotion and loving care of Jim Scherden, her husband and Carol’s brother,” said Tony Jurewicz. “Gail remained a pillar of strength and positive thinking for Jim during his many crippling years of suffering with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).”

This is the 33rd Named Endowment Fund established since the program was initiated in 1999. It enables donors to make contributions that are invested and grown until a targeted maturity in ten years. At that time, the annual earnings are used to support innovative classroom projects that impact all children at the Altoona Area School District. The AASD Foundation was established in 1987 to enhance educational opportunities for all students, K-12, and to encourage excellence and innovation in the classroom.
