AHS class of 1957 planning reunion

aThe reunion committee for the Altoona High School Class of 1957 is planning its 62nd anniversary Reunion to be held Sept. 27-29.

Friday there will be a get together at Park Hill Country Club, Saturday a buffet at The Blairmont Club and a brunch buffet is planned for Sunday also at The Blairmont Club.

Complete information and a reservation form will be mailed to all classmates at mid-year. A save the date e-mail will be sent to all classmates for whom the committee has an e-mail address.

If you receive an e-mail, and you keep in touch with any 1957 classmates, please forward this information along to them.

Chimrock club to hold dance today

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Chimrock Square & Round Dance Club will hold a dance from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Feb. 17, at the Masonic Hall, 1008 Edgar St.

It will feature music by the Beatles.

The cost is $5 to dance. It is free to observe.

Democratic Women to meet Tuesday

The Blair County Federation of Democratic Women will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Perkins in Altoona.

John Frederick, Executive Director of the IRC is scheduled to speak.

Horseshoe Seniors plan dinner-dance

There will be a Horseshoe Seniors dinner-dance at the Bavarian Hall, Thursday. Dinner is at 5:30 p.m. followed by 3 hours of dancing to a DJ. Admission is $12 each. Singles and couples are all welcome.

This is a fun evening for seniors and new people are encouraged to come out and enjoy a time of friendship, fellowship and companionship with others. This dinner-dance is a monthy event usually held the third Thurday of every month.

The Bavarian Hall is at 112 South 13th St. Reservations need to be made by the Monday before each event. For reservations and more information call Don Beatty at 946-1074.

Blair Garden Club offers scholarship

The Blair Garden Club of Altoona is offering a $1,000 scholarship to eligible high school seniors.

The requirements for this scholarship are: applicant must be a resident of Blair County. Students must be interested in pursuing further education in one of the following areas of study: botany, ecology, environmental engineering, environmental science, floriculture/floral design, forestry, horticulture, landscape architecture and design, nursery production/management, plant pathology/science, soil science/conservation, and turf management.

Graduating high school students who meet the qualifications are urged to contact their high school guidance counselor to obtain an application or contact Sue Brower at 696-1500 or Bev Kennedy at 942-1953. The deadline for all completed applications is April 5.

BCGS meeting to feature coverlets

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Blair County Genealogical Society, 431 Scotch Valley Road, will hold the Society’s monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The guest speaker will be Rebecca Calderwood. She will be talking about American Coverlets, Reference Points in History.

She will discuss the rise in popularity of American coverlets in the 1800s and the impact that new inventions had on the weavers and textile products.

She will also discuss the corner blocks and motif’s such as eagles, roses, houses and other patterns appearing on the coverlets. Examples of early coverlets will be on display, including an Umbros Miller and a dated J. Shafter from Blair County.

Calderwood is a retired school teacher and a member and volunteer at the Blair County Genealogical Society. She is also a member of The National Museum of the American Coverlet.

The meeting is free and open to the public.
