DAR honors Sons of American Legion

The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 516, Hollidaysburg, with an award for excellent volunteer work in historic preservation.

The award was given to recognize the squadron for maintenance and future upkeep of Union Cemetery in Hollidaysburg and other community service.

Knights to hold free throw contest

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Star of the Sea Council 4245 will hold its 2019 Free Throw Championship from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 30 at Blair Regional YMCA.

Registration is from 12:30 to 1 p.m.

Competition is free, but donations of nonperishable food items for the local food bank is encouraged.

The contest is open to boys and girls ages 7 to 14 as of Jan. 1, 2019. Participants must provide proof of age and may only participate in one council competition.

Awards will be given in all age groups, and winners ages 9 to 14 will advance to district competition in Bellwood in several weeks.

Imperial Sir to visit local Shriners Jan. 5

The Jaffa Shriners have announced an official visit of Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder and his Lady Cheryl to the Jaffa Shrine Center Jan. 5.

Jeff Sowder is a member of the board of directors of both Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children.

He will be the incoming Imperial Potentate of Shriners International in July.

Friends of Jaffa Shriners who wish to attend its open installation of officers and hear the guest speaker’s message regarding Shriners hospitals are welcome to attend at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 5.

Catholic Daughters honor deceased

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Our Lady of The Alleghenies Court No. 1755, met Nov. 14 at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

The court chaplain, Father Anthony Legarski, assisted by Deacon Charles Ahearn, celebrated a Mass in memory of all members who died in 2018. Next, the members gathered for a covered dish dinner.

A short business meeting was held afterward.

The women filled bags with personal gifts to accompany a larger handmade gift for residents of St. Leonard’s Home. They also filled boxes of personal items to be delivered and donated to the American Rescue Workers the following day.

The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Knights of Columbus Hall. All Catholic women are encouraged to get involved in 2019.

Golden Nuggets to hold dinner-dance

The Golden Nuggets Club in Altoona will hold a dinner-dance at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bavarian Hall, Altoona.

The cost is $10 per person. Three hours of dancing will be held in the upstairs ballroom after the meal. The club is accepting new members.

New Role-Playing Games Club to meet

BEDFORD — A new Role-Playing Games Club (RPGC) will hold a start-up meeting at 4 p.m. Dec. 30 at the Bedford Arts Cooperative, 110 W. Pitt St.

Participants can meet gaming coordinator Chris Bonello, get introduced to the exciting world of RP Games, and start planning the first epic adventure.

This club is recommended for people ages 13 and older.

There is no age limit, and anyone with an active imagination and an open Sunday afternoon is welcome to attend.

This club will meet weekly on a day to be determined on Dec. 30. Regular attendance is encouraged but not required. Drop-ins and guests are always welcome.

This weekly club is free (donations are appreciated).

There will be light refreshments at the start-up meeting.
