The event raised more than $3,700 for the local VVA chapter, which includes $1,500 from the Unter Uns.

Civics to hold membership drive

The Homers Gap Civics Association will hold its annual membership drive at noon Sunday at the center. There will be food, snacks and crafts for children.

Workshop for widows set for Oct. 12

Family Hospice and Palliative Care will offer “Navigating Loss,” a fun and inspiring workshop for women who have lost their spouse, from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Wingate by Wyndham Conference Room, 909 Chestnut Ave., Altoona.

Leading the workshop is nationally known TEDx speaker, certified grief recovery specialist, writer, widow and retreat leader Donna Marie Todd, who is the founder of AWidowsTale.com.

This workshop is designed for women who have lost their spouse at least six months prior to the event but not longer than 10 years previously. This lighthearted event gives participants the ability to connect with other women who share their situation and learn useful and inspiring ways to recover from loss and rebuild their lives.

Attendance is limited to 30 participants, and pre-registration is required. The day begins with morning beverages at 9:30 a.m. and runs until 4:30 p.m. All workshop materials, a take-home workbook and lunch are included with the $25 registration fee. This retreat is funded in part by a grant from the Home Nursing Agency Foundation.

Cat adoption event is this weekend

STATE COLLEGE — Fonda’s Foundlings cat rescue will hold a special cat adoption weekend at the State College Petco on Colonnade Blvd from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

All cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and tested for viruses. They are strictly indoor cats and not to be declawed.

Fonda’s Foundlings has rescued more than 1,800 cats and kittens from central Pennsylvania, and most of them now have their forever homes.

Due to the director’s health issues, she is trying to find homes for the remaining 45 cats. Some of these are shy but can be petted.

PSU Altoona talk on voting is Monday

Members of the Penn State Altoona and local community are invited to “Gerrymandering 101: A Guide to Redistricting — Does Your Vote Really Matter?” at 5:30 p.m. Monday in Room 141, Hawthorn Building.

Penn State Altoona faculty Nicholas Pyeatt, associate professor of political science, and Bob Trumpbour, professor of communications, will offer an overview of the redistricting process and guide attendees in a follow-up discussion. In addition, voter registration information will be provided.

The event is sponsored by Draw the Lines PA, a nonprofit good government group based in Pennsyl-vania, and Penn State Altoona’s Political Science and Communication Programs.

The Draw the Lines initiative provides a nonpartisan resource for Pennsylvanians who want to end gerrymandering and help democracy work better.

Pyeatt and Trumpbour currently serve as members of the Central PA Steering Committee for Draw the Lines PA.

Retired railroaders to meet Monday

A group of retired railroad employees will meet at

9 a.m. Monday at Tom & Joe’s Restaurant in Altoona.

The Pennsylvania State Retirees of Cresson, Ebens-burg and Altoona Centers will meet at 12:30 p.m. today at Hoss’s Steak & Sea House, Duncansville.

Fall Garden Day to be held Oct. 6

EBENSBURG — The Master Gardeners of Cambria County will host Fall Garden Day from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Ebensburg Municipal Building, 300 W. High St. This is a new location from previous years.

The doors will open at 8:30 a.m. for registration and refreshments.

The program begins at 9 a.m. and includes Mail Order Plants, Hydroponic Gardening, Tick Awareness, Fall Garlic Planting, Pollinator Project, Gardening Tools and the Garden Hotline.

Lunch will be provided.
