Astronomy club to hold sky watch

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Starlight Astronomy Club will hold a free public sky watch from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at Canoe Creek State Park.

The club will meet n the parking lot on the beach side of the lake. The rain date will be Saturday.

Visitors are encouraged to take binoculars or telescopes. Club members will also have telescopes available for public use.

This is an opportunity for people of all ages who have an interest in astronomy to get started in a fascinating hobby.

Library changes sensory story time

BELLWOOD — The Bellwood-Antis Public Library’s September Sensory Story Time has been moved to Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Sensory Story Time is especially for children ages 2 and older with autism, special needs and sensory concerns.

The program is free, but children must be accompanied by a caregiver. Each child will receive a free book from the Central Pennsylvania Autism Society.

Location changed for Juniata speaker

HUNTINGDON — Jonathan Mooney, writer and learning activist, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Alumni Hall at Juniata College. His presentation is free and open to the public.

The location was moved from Rosenberger to Alumni Hall.

Health, welfare council to meet

The Blair County Health and Welfare Council will meet from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Friday at The Arc of Blair County.

Peter Joudry will speak about the Nehemiah Project.

The council provides education and information to the public on health and human service needs, services and resources. The public is welcome to attend the meeting.

‘Wopsy Lady’ to speak at library tea

Elaine Conrad, known throughout Blair County as “The Wopsy Lady,” will present her latest Blair County program for the Friends of the Altoona Area Public Library’s fall tea on Thursday.

Conrad, a local history enthusiast who presented her popular history of the Wopsononock Resort at a Friends’ program last year, will talk about what Blair County looked like in previous years compared with today.

The program will begin at noon in the library theater and will be followed by refreshments in the board room.

Centre PARSE to meet Thursday

STATE COLLEGE — The Centre County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees (PARSE) will meet at 11:45 a.m. Thursday at Hoss’s Steak and Sea House, 1450 N. Atherton St.

Members and guests are on their own for lunch.

Tyler Gum, executive director of the PA Military Museum in Boalsburg, will share facts and stories about the museum’s artifacts.

All PARSE members and retired state employees are encouraged to attend.

PARSE provides a variety of benefits to state retirees: dental insurance, vision insurance, pet insurance, long-term care and more.

Family Day, 5K set for Saturday

JOHNSTOWN — Homecoming 2018 at Pennsyl-vania Highlands Community College will take place this week with various activities and community service projects for students and employees.

Student clubs and organizations will host “Spirit Week” Monday through Friday at each of the college’s locations in Blair, Cambria, Huntingdon and Somerset counties. For details on daily events, visit www.pennhighlands.edu/homecoming/.

Homecoming 2018 will culminate with Family Day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The college foundation’s annual Black Bear 5K is at 9 a.m. and is sponsored by Wessel & Co. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the race will begin at 9 a.m.

Pre-registration for the event is $15 and race-day registration is $20. Proceeds from the race will benefit college programs initiatives at Penn Highlands Community College.

Free activities will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities will include interactive inflatables, kids’ crafts, picnic lunch, games, caricatures and temporary tattoos.

The Railroaders Memorial Museum is once again participating in Smithsonian Magazines Museum Day on Saturday.

The Railroaders Memorial Museum will open its doors free of charge to all Museum Day ticket holders. Museum Day tickets are available for download at Smithsonian.com/MuseumDay, or by visiting WWW.Railroadcity.com and clicking on the Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day Live link.

One ticket per email address. One ticket is good for free entrance for two people on Saturday only (Horseshoe Curve not included).
