Society plans Altoona bus tour

“Altoona’s West Side” is the theme of the 2018 annual historical and architectural bus tour sponsored by the Blair County Historical Society.

The tour is scheduled for 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 16. An eight-page, colored photo guide of all the sites is included.

It will feature more than 30 sites on Altoona’s west side from Fourth to 20th streets and 12th to 20th avenues. This area includes Polish, Russian and Jew Hill districts, among others. Among the sites will be Victorian homes, past and present, churches, schools, synagogues, commercial structures and more.

Debarking from the bus for interior views of two churches is scheduled.

Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at www.blairhistory.org or a check may be made to BCHS and mailed to BCHS, 3419 Oak Lane, Altoona, PA 16602. Seats are limited to 30, and receipt of payment will be the reservation confirmation on a first-come basis. Refunds are not available. The reservation deadline is Saturday. The tour guide will be Dr. Michael G. Farrow.

200 Club to benefit youth bowling

MARTINSBURG — A 200 Club Raffle and Buffet will be held Sept. 8 at Morrisons Cove Memorial Park. Proceeds will benefit the Youth Area Bowling Association.

The doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and dinner will start at 6 p.m.

Only 200 tickets will be sold. Tickets are $50, which includes a meal and non-alcoholic beverages for two, a 200 Club raffle number and entertainment. There will be small games of chance, basket raffles and a 50-50 drawing.

Basket raffle, bake sale set for Sept. 9

EBENSBURG — Bishop Carroll Catholic high School will host a basket raffle and bake sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 9 in the school cafeteria.

The school is at 728 Ben Franklin Highway.

Contra dance to be held Sept. 7

STATE COLLEGE — The Central Pennsylvania Country Dance Association will hold its First Friday Contra Dance from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Sept. 7 at the State College Friends School, 1900 University Drive.

It will feature live music. No partner or experience is necessary. All dances will be taught.

Juniata Civics to hold corn boil

The Juniata Civic Association will hold its annual corn boil at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Juniata Pavilion, 206 W. 12th Ave., Juniata.

The main item of business will be planning its cruise-in, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Juniata Pavilion, benefiting the Marine Corps League’s Toys for Tots program.

Attendees are urged to take a new unwrapped toy or cash donation. Discussion on future activities at the Civics Sports Complex, volleyball and basketball courts will be requested from the membership.

Jeep raffle to help Restore the Roar

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Restore the Roar Committee has partnered with the American Legion Post 516 to raffle a 2018 Jeep Wrangler.

Only 800 tickets will be sold. Tickets are $100 each and can be purchased at the home Tiger Football games (Sept. 7, 14 and 28 and Oct. 19) as well as various ticket outlets including: Allstate Insurance/

Cullen Sheehan, Ace Fix-It Hardware in Duncans-ville, The Locker Room, the Hollidaysburg High School Athletic Office, the Holliadysburg Administration Building, the American Legion in Hollidaysburg and the American Legion Social Hall.

Tickets will also be available at HAYFA games on Saturdays at Tiger Stadium.

Proceeds will benefit the fencing replacement project at Tiger Stadium. The barbed wire fencing around the perimeter of the stadium will be replaced with brick pillars and new fencing.

The committee also sold brick pillars to help with the cost of this project. If you are interested in purchasing one of the five remaining pillars to honor a business or family, contact a committee member.

Allegheny Chorale to begin 34th year

TYRONE — The Allegheny Chorale, under the direction of Deborah Estright, is beginning the 34th year as a nonprofit choral organization in the Tyrone area; providing free concerts to the Central Pennsylvania area during the Christmas and spring season.

The Allegheny Chorale is accepting new members; no auditions are required.

Anyone with a love for music that would like to join is invited. Weekly rehearsals for the Christmas season will begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Tyrone Area High School music room.

YMCA collecting items for yard sale

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Blair Regional YMCA (formerly Hollidaysburg Area YMCA) will hold its fourth annual Community Yard Sale Fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 28 and 8 to 11:45 a.m.

Sept. 29 at the Y’s 1111 Hewit St. location on the outdoor basketball courts (weather permitting).

Donations will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 11, 13 and 18.

All proceeds will benefit the Blair Regional YMCA’s 2018 annual campaign, which provides scholarships to those who cannot afford the YMCA’s services.

Suggested donations are toys, furniture, sports equipment, books, bikes, kitchen and houseware tools, seasonal/holiday and camping and outdoor gear. No clothing, shoes or tube TVs will be accepted.
